Natural stone (marble, travertine, etc.) is softer and more porous than most stones; It not only scratches easily, but also etches easily.Natural stone is sensitive to acids in many different foods (including citrus products, soda water, etc.) and chelating agents in household cleaners.
Just like ceramic tiles, natural stone is one of the most abused and overlooked floor and wall surfaces in the home, simply because of the care involved in cleaning it.Etchings on polished marble or travertine floors can be a constant reminder that grandma wasn't always right about the benefits of cleaning with a solution of vinegar and water.
Diamond grinding:
Stones that are corroded, worn and scratched can only be repaired by using mechanical abrades underneath a rotating machine.Diamond abrasives resurface/remove small amounts of stone (just enough below etch marks and scratches). All diamond grinding is done with water to contain dust. The following surfacing procedure will determine the desired surface gloss.
Honing:
The stone is mechanically resurfacing with diamond abrasives and water to achieve a uniform honed surface gloss. In some cases, polished marble, granite, travertine, or limestone can be mechanically honed to remove pre-existing surface finishes.
Polishing: The stone is mechanically polished to produce a high gloss.Very light etchings, wear and scratches can be removed by a polishing process, but diamond grinding is required if the stone surface is etched, worn and scratched at moderate depth.
Sealing (optional but recommended): This will be the last step in the stone cleaning process.Depending on the sealer chosen, we will use a heavy duty professional grade sealer to protect your stone.
