Concrete Surface Polishing Steps

Polishing steps

Step 1: Clean the fully cured concrete countertop with water, then use a rubber spatula to scrape away any grit that may have been scraped as you ground the concrete.

Step 2: If you find tiny blemishes or holes, be prepared to fill the gaps with repair paste before polishing. Pastes can be matched to countertop colors, or contrasting colors can be used to create textures. You can make your own mud by mixing cement, sand, water and paint. But for convenience, consider buying ready-made, prepackaged paste, which is often sold by countertop mix suppliers. Be sure to buy products that match what you are using. Some can be made with a variety of pigments.

Step 3: Depending on the desired polishing effect, start polishing with the thickest polishing pad (usually 50 sand). Check the entire surface, including the edges, to make sure you provide a steady stream of water to the surface as you grind. Keep the polish level.

Step 4: After polishing the entire concrete countertop with a 50-stone pad, replace it with a 100-stone pad and polish the entire countertop again. Repeat this process gradually through all pads until the best 1500 sand pad is available. At this point, the sheen begins to form. While you are sanding, stop periodically to scrape off small pieces of the surface with a rubber spatula and check that enough aggregate is exposed. There are no hard and fast rules for how long each pad needs to be polished. It depends on the hardness of the concrete and the effect you want to achieve.

Step 5: Use a hand-held diamond block or pad to polish any areas of the work surface that cannot be reached by the electric polisher. These pads can also be used to polish the edges of countertops. Like the pads on electric polishers, the hand-held pads have sand content ranging from 120 to 1,500 grains.
